Carlton Solitaire is a two-deck Klondike variant played across eight tableau piles instead of the usual seven. The deal is triangular, one card on the first pile, two on the second, and so on up to eight, and you only get a single pass through the stock. It's a tough game, with just a 5% chance of winning, played with two decks, and your result comes down mostly to skill and luck.

How to play Carlton Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

8 tableau piles: Build down by alternating color. A sequence of cards in alternating colors can be moved together as a group. Any card, or group of cards, can fill an empty pile. At the start of the game, the first pile gets one face-up card, the second gets two, and so on up to eight.

Stock: Click the stock to deal one card to each tableau pile. There are no redeals.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

Any ace can be placed on an empty foundation pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 10 of clubs is a J of clubs. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

There are eight tableau piles, with one card in the first pile, two cards in the second, three cards in the third, and so on. The top card in each pile is dealt face-up, while the rest are dealt face-down.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the only cards that fit on the Q of clubs are the J of hearts and J of diamonds.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

Groups of cards in an alternating red-and-black sequence can be moved together from one tableau pile to another.

Stock:

The stock holds the leftover cards.
