How to play Castile Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

8 Fans: Build down to 8 fans regardless of suit. Only the top card of each pile is playable. Only Kings can fill spaces. At the start of the game, each pile is given three cards.

4 reserve piles: No structure. The top card can be played on the foundations or fans. There are no empty spaces. At the start of the game, each pile is given 7 cards.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card may be added to a foundation pile if it is one higher than the pile's previous top card and is of the same suit. As a result, the only card that might be played on a 9 of spades is a 10 of spades.

Cards cannot be taken from the foundation after they have been placed.

Reserve:

There are four reserves, each with seven cards at first. Every card is dealt face-up. There are no cards that can be moved into the reserves. Each reserve's top card can be played to the tableau or the foundation.

Tableau:

Splayed downhill, eight tableau piles of three cards each. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card may be added to a tableau pile if it is one lower than the pile's previous top card and of any suit. As a result, the card that may be played on a five is a four of any suit.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Only kings may fill empty spots in the tableau.

Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.
