Crescent Solitaire lets you build both up and down within a suit across sixteen tableau piles, wrapping from King back around to Ace. When you get stuck, you have three redeals that cycle each pile's bottom card up to the top. It's a tough one, with a 20% chance of winning, and with two full decks in play, luck matters more here than skill.

How to play Crescent Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up in suit from Ace to King on the left-hand piles, and down in suit from King to Ace on the right-hand piles. Cards can shift from one pile to the other once the two piles of a suit meet. Four piles start with an Ace of each suit; the other four start with a King of each suit.

16 tableau piles: Build up or down by suit, wrapping as needed from Ace to King or King to Ace. Only one card can be moved at a time, and no gaps may be filled. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt 6 cards face-up.

Stock: Three redeals available. Each redeal moves the bottom card of every tableau pile to the top; every other card keeps its place.

Foundation:

There are two kinds of foundation piles.

The Aces Foundation

The Aces Foundation has four piles, each starting with one ace. A card can follow if it's one rank higher and the same suit, so only the J of hearts can follow the 10 of hearts. Each pile caps out at 13 cards.

The Kings Foundation

The Kings Foundation also has four piles, each starting with one king. Here you build down instead of up: a card can follow if it's one rank lower and the same suit, so only the 5 of clubs can follow the 6 of clubs. Each pile caps out at 13 cards too.

Cards may be removed from any foundation.

Tableau:

The sixteen tableau piles are dealt six cards each, all face-up.

A card can join a tableau pile if it's one rank higher or lower than the pile's top card and the same suit, so the 8 of hearts will accept either the 7 of hearts or the 9 of hearts. Foundation cards can't move to the tableau, but you can play a king on an ace since the sequence wraps around.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card can be played onto the foundation or any non-empty tableau pile.

The tableau's empty spaces may not be filled.

Only one card may be moved at a time; sequences are not permitted.
