Lucas Solitaire is a compact member of the Forty Thieves family: a single 52-card deck dealt across thirteen tableau piles of three cards, with an ace already sitting on each of the four foundations before you make a move.

Several Forty Thieves variants get called "Lucas" over the years, and this seems to be the version the name sticks to most. It's a simple game, with a 97% chance of winning, and your odds come down mostly to skill and a bit of luck.

Its closest relative is Thirty Nine Steps Solitaire — same board, minus the head start on the foundations. Or step back further to the classic it's descended from, Forty Thieves Solitaire.

Lucas plays gentler than most; the classic Solitaire is the faster, sharper original if you want more bite.

How to play Lucas Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up in suit from Ace to King. Each pile starts with its ace already in place.

13 tableau piles: Build down in the same suit. Cards move one at a time — a run can't be dragged as a group. Any card can be used to fill an empty space. At the start of the game, each pile is given three cards face-up.

Stock: Click to turn over one card at a time to the waste pile. There are no redeals.

Waste: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Each foundation pile starts with an ace already on it.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 6 of diamonds is a 7 of diamonds.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Thirteen tableau piles hold three cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a Q of diamonds is a J of diamonds.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Only one card can move at a time between tableau piles; there's no dragging a whole run.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile, and the remaining cards make up the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste pile. You only get one pass through the stock, with no reshuffle once it runs out.

The top card of the waste pile can be played to the tableau or a foundation.
