Nestor Solitaire is a pure matching patience in which the whole deck is cleared by removing pairs of equal rank. Every card is dealt face-up from the very start, so there is nothing hidden and nothing left to draw — what you see on the table is exactly what you have to work with. That openness makes Nestor a quiet, thoughtful game of foresight rather than luck, even though its published win rate sits at only about 18%.
The deal is what gives Nestor its character. Forty-eight cards are spread across eight columns of six, and the shuffle guarantees that no two cards of the same rank ever land in the same column. Four leftover cards sit below the tableau as an always-available reserve. Because a pair can only be discarded when both of its cards are currently exposed, the challenge is one of sequencing: you have to peel the columns down in an order that keeps future matches reachable instead of burying them.
Good play in Nestor is mostly about patience and planning ahead. Look for ranks that sit near the foot of several columns and clear those first, and lean on the four reserve cards to break awkward stand-offs where two cards you need are stacked one behind the other. The undo button is your best friend here — because the layout never changes, you can experiment with a line of discards, see where it stalls, and back out to try a smarter order.

How to play Nestor Solitaire
Layout:
8 tableau piles: Each column is dealt 6 cards face-up, and the shuffle ensures no column holds two cards of the same rank. Only the exposed card at the foot of a column is available for play.
4 reserve cards: Four single cards are dealt below the tableau. Each one stays available throughout the game and can be paired at any time.
Discard: Matched pairs are sent here and removed from play. Cards are never taken back out.
Tableau:
The eight columns are spread downward with every card face-up. No building is allowed on the tableau — cards are never stacked into sequences. You may only remove two exposed cards of the same rank together, for example a pair of Sevens or a pair of Kings. As each card is discarded, the card behind it becomes available.
Foundation:
There is a single hidden discard pile that collects the pairs you remove. The game is won when every card has been paired off and the tableau and reserve are empty.
