Royal Family Solitaire deals the whole deck face-up right from the start: a King goes straight onto each of the four foundations, and the other twelve piles get four cards apiece, no stock and no redeal at all. You build same-suit runs up or down the tableau and can drop any card into an empty space, so there's almost always something to do.

That openness is why it's such an easy win: about 98% of deals go all the way. It's played with a single deck, and your result comes down mostly to skill rather than luck.

The game is comparable to others such as Indefatigable Solitaire.

How to play Royal Family Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build down from King to Ace in the same suit. The Kings are dealt here at the start of the game.

12 tableau piles: Build up or down within the same suit. The top card is available to play on the foundations or another tableau pile, though only one card may be moved at a time. Any card may fill an empty space. At the start of the game, each pile is given four cards, all dealt face-up.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Each foundation starts with a King already in place.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of hearts is a 7 of hearts.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Twelve tableau piles of four cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank higher or lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only cards that fit on the J of clubs are the 10 of clubs and Q of clubs.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.
