Whitehorse Solitaire trims down Klondike's opening deal: instead of spreading one to seven cards across seven piles, every tableau pile starts with just a single face-up card. The trade-off is that once you clear a pile out, only a king can move in to fill it, the same rule Yukon Solitaire uses. The stock turns over three cards at a time, and redeals are unlimited, so you get plenty of chances to dig out the cards you need.

It's an easy game, with about a 98% chance of winning on a single deck.

Whitehorse and Yukon Solitaire share that king-only rule for empty piles, though Yukon lets you move any grouping of cards regardless of order. If you'd rather play it straight, the original Solitaire is here too.

How to play Whitehorse Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

7 tableau piles: Build down by alternating color. A run of cards in alternating colors can be moved together as a group. An empty pile can only be filled by a king. Each pile starts with one card, dealt face-up.

Stock: Click to turn over three cards at a time to the waste. Redeals are unlimited.

Waste: The top card is always available to play on a foundation or the tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace can be placed on an empty foundation pile.

A card can join a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's top card. So the only card that can go on a 9 of spades is the 10 of spades.

The top card of a foundation pile can be played back onto the tableau if a spot will take it.

Tableau:

Each of the seven tableau piles starts with a single face-up card.

A card can join a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's top card. So the only cards that can go on a 4 of clubs are the 3 of hearts or 3 of diamonds.

Any tableau card that isn't covered by another card is free to move, onto the foundation or another tableau pile.

Only a king, alone or leading a valid run, can fill an empty tableau pile.

A run of cards in alternating colors, from high to low, can be moved together from one tableau pile to another.

Stock and waste:

The remaining cards form the stock, with a single waste pile.

Clicking the stock deals three cards to the waste at a time (fewer if the stock is running low). Once you're through the stock, the waste flips back into a new stock, so you can go through the deck again, as many times as you like.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or a foundation.
