Seven reserve piles keep extra cards on tap for the tableau or foundations, making this the easier of the two Klondike-based Agnes games. A 50-50 mix of skill and luck.

David Parlett found two different Klondike variants both nicknamed "Agnes," so he gave each a last name to tell them apart; all of them are named after royal mistresses. Agnes Bernauer Solitaire is the simpler of the two, thanks to its seven reserve piles, which hold extra cards ready to play straight to the tableau or foundations whenever you need them. It's medium in difficulty, with a 50% chance of winning, and skill counts for as much as the luck of the shuffle.

Agnes Sorel Solitaire, Agnes Three, Seymour, Prince Albert, Agnes Two, and Agnes Four are all cousins in this family.

If the reserve piles here feel like too much help, plain Solitaire offers none of that cushion.

How to play Agnes Bernauer Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up in suit from whatever rank lands on the first pile, wrapping from King back to Ace as needed, until each pile holds 13 cards.

7 tableau piles: Build down by alternating color. Groups of cards in sequence can be moved together the same way. Only a King, or a valid sequence led by one, can fill an empty space. To start, one card is dealt to the first pile, two to the second, and so on up to seven cards on the seventh.

Stock: Click the stock to add one card to each reserve pile. There are no redeals.

7 reserve piles: Each pile's top card can be played to the tableau or a foundation. They have no other structure.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

One of them is dealt a card at random to start; the rest begin with cards of that same rank.

A card can be added to a foundation pile if it's one rank higher than the pile's current top card and the same suit, so the only card that fits on a 3 of hearts is a 4 of hearts.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Reserve:

There are seven reserve piles, each starting with one card. You can't move cards into the reserves, only out of them, onto the tableau or a foundation.

Tableau:

There are seven tableau piles, with one card in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and so on. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile if it's one rank lower than the pile's current top card and the opposite color, so the only cards that fit on a 10 of clubs are a 9 of hearts or a 9 of diamonds.

Any tableau card not covered by another card is free to move to the foundation or another tableau pile.

Only a King, or a valid sequence led by one, can fill an empty tableau spot.

Cards in an alternating red-black sequence can move together from one tableau pile to another.

Stock:

The stock holds the leftover cards.
