Any card can fill an empty tableau pile here, a house-rule mercy on a normally brutal Klondike cousin. Even with that, it wins just 1% of the time.

David Parlett found two different Klondike variants both nicknamed "Agnes," so he gave each a last name to tell them apart; both are named after royal mistresses. Agnes Sorel Solitaire is normally brutal to win, so I loosened the classic rule and let any card fill an empty tableau pile here. Even with that help it's extremely difficult, with a 1% chance of winning, and the outcome comes down mostly to the luck of the draw.

How to play Agnes Sorel Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up in suit from whatever rank lands on the first pile, wrapping from King to Ace as needed, until each pile has 13 cards.

7 tableau piles: All 7 piles build down by the same color. Groups of cards in sequence can move together the same way, and any card can fill an empty tableau pile. At the start of the game, one card is dealt to the first pile, two cards to the second, and up to seven cards to the seventh pile.

Stock: Click the stock to add one card to each tableau pile. There are no redeals.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

One of them is dealt a card at random to start; the rest begin with cards of that same rank.

A card can be added to a foundation pile if it's one rank higher than the pile's current top card and the same suit, so the only card that fits on a 9 of spades is a 10 of spades.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

There are seven tableau piles, with one card in the first, two in the second, three in the third, and so on. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile if it's one rank lower and the same color as the pile's current top card, so the cards that fit on a Q of hearts are a J of hearts or a J of diamonds.

Any tableau card not covered by another card is free to move to the foundation or another tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty tableau spot.

Cards in a same-color sequence, high to low, can move together from one tableau pile to another.

Stock:

The stock holds the leftover cards.

Click it, and one card is dealt onto each tableau pile.
