Ali Baba Solitaire is a one-deck version of Forty and Eight Solitaire where you can move whole sequences at once instead of one card at a time. With 40 cards already dealt to the tableau and only 12 left in the stock, plenty of deals turn out unwinnable — but once you open up an empty tableau pile, things tend to flow. Call it medium difficulty with even odds, a 50% shot at winning. It's a single-deck game, and how you fare rests on skill as much as the luck of the draw.

It's closely related to Cassim Solitaire, a variant built on the same idea.

How to play Ali Baba Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit. Foundations start empty — Aces move here from the tableau as you play.

10 tableau piles: Built down in suit. Cards in descending order down in suit may be moved as a group. Any card can be used to fill a space. At the start of the game, each pile is given four cards.

Stock: Click to turn over 1 card at a time to the waste. There are no redeals.

Waste: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles, empty at the start.

Any ace can move to any vacant foundation pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 4 of diamonds is a 5 of diamonds.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Ten tableau piles of four cards each. Every card is dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on an 8 of spades is a 7 of spades.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

If all cards are of the same suit, groups of cards in succession from high to low may be moved from one tableau column to another.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile and the remaining cards comprise the stock.

When you click on the stock, one card from the stock is dealt to the waste. You get a single pass through the stock — there are no redeals.

The top waste card can be played to the tableau or foundation.
