A two-deck spin on Canfield, a notch harder than Double Canfield, where skill counts more than luck: a 75% win rate. Demon Game Layout

Demon Solitaire is a two-deck take on Canfield that's a notch harder than Double Canfield. "Demon" is actually the common English name for Canfield itself, and we're borrowing it here the same way Thomas Warfield did for his own game of that name. This version has a 75% chance of winning, played with two decks, where skill decides more than luck does.

Canfield Solitaire and Double Canfield Solitaire are its closest relatives; Three Demons is another variation on the same idea. If you'd rather play the original, Solitaire is always there too.

How to play Demon Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build in suit from whatever rank is dealt to the first pile, wrapping from King to Ace as needed, until each pile holds all 13 cards of its suit.

8 tableau piles: Build down by alternating color. Move a run of cards together as long as it's a valid alternating-color sequence. Empty spots refill from the reserve when there's a card available, or with any card once the reserve runs out. Each pile starts with one card.

Stock: Click to flip three cards at a time. Redeals are unlimited.

Waste: The top card is always available for play on the tableau or foundations.

Reserve: The top card is always available for play on the tableau or foundations. 40 cards are dealt here at the start of the game.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

Each foundation pile gets a random starting card, and the rest of that pile builds up from there.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 4 of diamonds is the 5 of diamonds. A pile can hold no more than 13 cards.

The top card of each foundation pile can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Reserve:

There's one reserve pile, dealt 40 cards at the start. The top card is face up; the rest are face down. No cards can be moved into the reserve, but its top card can be played to the tableau or the foundation.

Tableau:

Eight tableau piles of one card each, all dealt face up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the opposite color of the pile's current top card, so the only cards that fit on a 4 of diamonds are the 3 of spades and 3 of clubs.

Any tableau card not covered by another card is free to play onto the foundation or another tableau pile.

An empty tableau spot is filled right away with a card from the reserve. Once the reserve is empty, any card can fill an open spot.

A run of cards can move from one tableau pile to another as long as the colors alternate all the way down.

Stock and waste:

There's one waste pile; the rest of the cards make up the stock.

Clicking the stock deals three cards to the waste. You can go through the stock as many times as you like; if fewer than three cards remain at the end of a pass, those are dealt instead. Before the next pass begins, the waste is turned back into the stock.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
