Fan Solitaire deals the whole deck across eighteen small piles, called fans, then has you build each one downward by suit while sending cards up to four foundations, also by suit. It's part of the same family as La Belle Lucie, Shamrocks, Trefoil, Clover Leaf, and Three Shuffles and a Draw, all of which share this layout with small variations. Fan is medium difficulty, with a 38% chance of winning, and played with a single deck.

How to play Fan Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from ace to king in the same suit.

18 fans: Build down by suit across 18 fans. Only one card can move to a foundation or another fan at a time. Only kings can fill empty spaces. The first sixteen fans start with three cards each and the last two start with two cards each, all face-up.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace can be moved to an empty foundation pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile if it's one rank higher than the pile's current top card and the same suit. So the only card that fits on a 4 of spades is the 5 of spades.

A foundation pile's top card can move back into play if another pile will accept it.

Fan:

There are eighteen fan piles: the first sixteen have three cards each and the last two have two cards each, all dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a fan if it's one rank lower than the pile's current top card and the same suit. So the only card that fits on a 5 of spades is the 4 of spades.

Any fan card not covered by another card can be played to the foundation or another fan.

Only kings may fill an empty fan.

You can only move one card at a time; sequences aren't allowed.
