Little Forty Solitaire sets up exactly like Forty Thieves Solitaire — two decks, ten tableau piles of four cards each — but loosens every rule that makes Forty Thieves tough. Suit doesn't matter when you're building down, you can drag whole runs instead of one card at a time, and you get three passes through the stock instead of one. All that slack is why it wins 97% of the time; you still need a bit of skill to route the cards home, but the deck is doing most of the favors.

This whole loosened-up ruleset traces back to the classic Solitaire, the game where it all started.

How to play Little Forty Solitaire

Layout:

8 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

10 tableau piles: Build down regardless of suit. Runs of cards can be moved together no matter what suit they're in. An empty pile can be filled with any card. At the start of the game, each pile is given four cards face-up.

Stock: Click to deal three cards to the waste pile at a time. Three passes through the deck are allowed.

Waste: The top card can be played on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are eight foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 5 of diamonds is a 6 of diamonds. There can be no more than 13 cards in a pile.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

Ten tableau piles hold four cards each, and every card is dealt face-up.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower than the pile's current top card, regardless of suit, so the only card that fits on a four is a three of any suit.

Cards on the tableau that are not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.

Any card can fill an empty slot in the tableau.

Regardless of their suits, groups of cards in succession from high to low may be transferred from one tableau column to another.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile, and the remaining cards make up the stock.

When you click the stock, three cards are dealt to the waste pile. You're allowed three passes through the stock. If there aren't enough cards left for a full deal at the end of a pass, only the remaining cards go out. Before the next pass, the waste pile flips over to become fresh stock.

The top card of the waste pile can be played to the tableau or a foundation.
