Thomas Warfield built this tough one-deck take on Interchange Solitaire, keeping the same suit-locked tableau but cutting the game down to a single deck. It's a hard one, with just a 4% chance of winning, and skill only gets you so far when the deals are this unforgiving.

It's closest to Unlimited Solitaire, which plays by the same suit-locked rules but with two decks instead of one.

How to play Single Interchange Solitaire

Layout:

4 foundation piles: Build up from Ace to King in the same suit.

5 tableau piles: Build down in the same suit. Runs of cards in sequence move together. Fill an empty pile with a King, or a run of cards led by a King. At the start of the game, each pile is dealt 5 cards, alternating face-up and face-down.

Stock: Click to flip cards over one at a time to the waste. Redeals are unlimited.

Waste: The top card is always available for play on the foundations or tableau.

Foundation:

There are four foundation piles.

Any ace in the foundation may be transferred to any vacant pile.

A card can be added to a foundation pile only if it's one rank higher and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 10 of spades is a J of spades.

The top card of each foundation can be moved back into play if another pile will accept it.

Tableau:

There are five tableau piles of five cards each. The odd-numbered cards in each pile (the 1st, 3rd, and 5th) are dealt face-up; the even-numbered cards (the 2nd and 4th) are dealt face-down.

A card can be added to a tableau pile only if it's one rank lower and the same suit as the pile's current top card, so the only card that fits on a 7 of clubs is a 6 of clubs.

Any tableau card not covered by another card is free to be played onto the foundation or another tableau pile.

Only a King, or a run of cards led by a King, may fill an empty tableau spot.

Since building always keeps cards in the same suit, any run you've built can be picked up and moved to another pile as a group.

Stock and waste:

There is one waste pile, and the remaining cards make up the stock.

Click the stock to deal one card to the waste. You can pass through the stock as many times as you like.

The top card of the waste can be played to the tableau or foundation.
